NYC Mesh has been around for more than a decade. I assume they talked to other similar projects when building it.

This is not a new concept, its been around since 2014 so they will just have copied a lot from existing projects like the german freifunk which i participate in (exists since 2003).

It looks like they made those thin sections roughly 2x wider in the stl files to strengthen it. That makes me a little more optimistic.

I just measured the red ones original dimensions with calipers and the individual comb parts have 0.5mm at their thinnest and 1mm at their thickest. My 3D printing is not perfect, but i just dont see how that is gonna survive. Maybe i will try on the weekend and let you know how it went.

Pretty sure these would break just from sliding it on and off, getting it caught on beard hair or skin or dropping it from a like 30cm.

Cool idea, but also basically the worst shape to use a 3D printer for. Those things will crumble as soon as they experience any sort of real world load in a slightly wrong direction.

So far i havent been able to find any analysis of this dataset. Gonna be interesting stuff in there for sure, but DDoSecrets will only share the data with trusted journalists, so it will take a while to comb through it i guess.

Generally you should assume that deletion is not guaranteed when it comes to fediverse stuff. In this case it seems like a bug, but other instances might also be configured to just refuse deletion requests so you can never be sure anything is gone. This also applies to the internet in general tho.

I mean yeah, why would anyone see your posts. I doubt people look at the “new” live feed much on mastodon. I dont have an account, but as far as i can see there are zero sorting features like on lemmy. There is only the live feed and a couple “Explore” filters that are not configurable.

So yeah nobody will see your posts unless you already have followers… Thats just how microblogging works by default. On lemmy people will just automatically see your posts if its posted into a community with a bunch of subscribers.

No, not really. It has already started caving to Turkish political censorship requests for example. They are implementing checkmark bullshit and from the start they required you to have an account to view all content.

Thats exactly what it sounds like, a “bridge”. An island doesnt stop being an island because it is connected to mainland with a bridge. You could also bridge twitter or facebook to mastodon, but that wouldnt make them part of the fediverse.

A bridge is just a piece of software that receives data from one protocol and re-formats it into another protocol. You could bridge SMS to bluesky if you wanted.

Bluesky doesnt even properly federate with instance using their own protocol so its not even in any way comparable to the fediverse.
