It’s not even that it’s low-tech. Tape is high-tech, it’s been updated over the years. LTO10s are targeting 36TB of data per tape.

It’s the pig-ignorant newbies thinking “hurr durr tapes are 1970s tech”. Hard drives are also 1970s tech.

They have their advantages and disadvantages, is all. They’re not well suited for situations where you can’t guarantee a clean room (or enclosed tape reader), for instance, since the tape medium is exposed to the air. Dust can mess it up REAL good.

But for some situations, it’s indispensable.

Yeah, we’ve got on-prem cloud hosting at a university, and moving away from VMware is an ongoing process. Still. Two, three years after the writing was on the wall. They’d rather pay the Danegeld.

I work for a Canadian university library and I assure you that data archival efforts are proceeding apace. I can’t really say more without possibly endangering American colleagues.

I’ve noticed that every different social media medium/site has its own Eternal September moment. I think, optimistically, that we’re still before that point. If we get popular and the general population arrives, it’ll also attract the predatory ecosystem of state actors and corporate bullshit.

I think Lemmy and the Fediverse in general is resistant to that, but not immune. I expect an effort to create One Big Instance that most people use, or an oligarchy of large instances working together, like Microsoft and Gmail and co do with email.

I would say no* but the asterisk has a few paragraphs involving funding sustainability, cryptobro involvement, and dubious decentralization.

There is often very limited table space and stacking the dishes can be more about making room than server convenience.

That said, obviously don’t be dumb about it. Stack dishes properly and maybe stick the utensils in a cup so they aren’t at risk of falling during transport.

They have good flights but they do make a lot of noise at the waterfront. The smell of avgas is overwhelming, too. Nothing against them, it’s unavoidable, but I’m looking forward to their electric Beaver plane.

This is a baffling comment. There are tons of people on mastodon, more than I could ever hope to keep up with. I have a couple hundred accounts on follow and never manage to keep up. Honestly it could use some sorting.

I don’t think that is necessarily out of the running yet. OS development is expensive and low profit. Commodification may be inevitable. Control of the shell and GUI, where they can push advertisements and shovelware and telemetry on you, that is profitable.

So in 20 years, 50? I predict proprietary OSes will die out eventually, balance of probability.

They also tend to have linux support. Where the AAA companies want to eat the entire mammoth and scorn the scraps, small companies can thrive off of small prey and the offal. :)

My breakfast has been cottage cheese on homemade sourdough toast for a solid decade. Crazy cheap if you don’t count the 12 hours it takes to make the bread. ;)
