My parents are almost completely technological-illiterate (i.e. due to old age my father doesn’t even have a cellphone nor knows how to use it, and my mother barely can know how to do calls in her phone - both of them don’t know how to use a computer) but they know they don’t know about stuff - so hearing stories like that kind of make me be thankful they’re like that and that they will hear me when needing some advice or need to do something involving something tech-y

Honest question, what use has data transfer graphs?

I got a Logitech MX Mouse Master 3s. Not sure if it can fit into what you want or need because I’m no gamer (like, not even minesweeper) but it has more than 5 buttons.

I set it up with logiops so you could customize its buttons - for example I set up one of its buttons to open KDE Plasma’s overview.

Good mouse overall though the bottom cavity where the wheel resides can get dirty so I have to open it like every couple of months to clean it.

Falkon, because it’s fully integrated to KDE. Though I wish an actual Qt web browser running Gecko (or Servo, maybe one day) existed.

In my third world country the real issue is about costs. At this very moment cooking with gas is cheaper than cooking with electric.

The gas provider company mandates an inspection on every home gas apppliance and the installation every 5 years to check for good connections and correct ventilation (if a home does not pass the checks the service is suspended), so I guess at least it diminishes the risks to some degree.

But still since gas is going to be a lot expensive in the following weeks, maybe the tables will turn. But then you’ll need to get an electric stove.

You can’t just throw money and devs at it and expect the problem to be solved.

Then nobody will throw money at any project at all, because everything eventually will be solved by “magick”.

Destinating more resources to that quickens and makes better that process, though, incentivating people to work on it and test it.

No? Okay, but then why do all these foundations/organizations exist? And why do they hold such vast amounts of resources, while extorting the projects they claim to help?

I’d only add that it’s not only about the kernel - they are home to a project that could be in the medium-long term a serious alternative to Google’s blink/Apple’s webkit, and of course an alternative to the hegemony of Chrome, but they actively chose to just not give them a single cent. Yes I am talking about Servo.

Well I wasn’t thinking about memory (and maybe that’s the reason some people downvoted that comment…) but because in my experience NetworkManager takes time starting at boot and with months/years it was taking more and more time. I reset it once and kept doing the same thing.

As you said you’re planning on a home server kind of thing I’d think setting up a static ip is a good idea and NetworkManager is just an overkill for that - you could very well go along with Gentoo’s netifrc.

If you can live without Networkmanager, I’d disable it and move your network setup to a static ip. Networkmanager can hog resources.

To those who downvote, really?

Not a long time lemmy user but as I’ve said here from time to time, it seems this inherited Reddit’s toxicity. People downvote here things just because - not because something doesn’t contribute to a discussion in any way whatsoever, but because they just don’t like it. It’s so stupid.

Take my posts in Colombia@lemmy.world - all of them have at most 0 net upvotes. Nobody there posts anything but me and nobody comments anything, but I do get downvotes because…?

TL;DR - don’t pay attention to downvotes here. You’re right, he’s an asshole. Though as with almost all social media you shouldn’t take no one, not even someone as influential as LTT, as a reputable source of information.

Not sure but it seems to me most major distributions offer you to do a separate /home partition by default? I may be wrong but this happens with the likes of Fedora and Ubuntu? Or at least they do recommend to make it that way

Actually there’s some support for Wayland. Tried it last year, but had to do serious rummage trying to make it work. For starters I can recall it spitted a video but the command throwed an error at the end and could not understand why. Also i seem to recall the video stopped way after finishing the command.

Even had to recompile all of ffmeg to add support for wayland recording (though Gentoo makes this really easy). One thing for certain is that Gentoo’s ffmpeg stable version is fairly behind from upstream’s so that could have had a hand on it too.

No, because back in the day when Ubuntu was “Linux for human beings” you could literally feel that in almost every aspect of it, from the ease of its installation to its icon theme and system sounds to its help pages. It was their “selling” point - it made Linux friendly and reachable for many people, as it did for you and me.

It’s been more than 15 years since I used Ubuntu but from that point I really could feel that what @merci3@lemmy.world says is true - it no longer offered any real benefit compared to Fedora, Solus, Mint or whatever distro targeted at people getting into Linux. You won’t find many people saying that Ubuntu really stands out from their similars about something. It just became another option, forgot what was “Ubuntu” about (remember the Amazon ads scandal?) and seem to be really stubborn into impose to the community their way of doing things (snaps, mir…). Or tell me with a serious face how the snap thing makes the life easier of someone wanting to install a deb.

It’s correct what you say - as many other distros, they have done a great amount of work over the years and most of us are grateful to it because we could get into Linux thanks to it, nobody can deny that. It’s just that said work no longer seems the case nor they seem really interested about that.

Of course not - if Xfce has too few people working on it, MATE has even less than them, and Enlightenment has even less than MATE. And note that Enlightenment is not only the desktop environment per se but the E libraries (and those are no regurgitated shit - for example, some car makers have used them on their infotainment systems). I’d think it’d be amazing if those two (or those three) could do a Dragon-ball-z kind of fusion, I think those three have really similar goals. Hell, if that was actually a thing most probably I’d move to that.

I know Xfce folks have submitted patches to GTK over the years, but it’s just that GNOME’s enshittification has pregnated GTK to a point of no return and Xfce devs are very well aware of that (for example, the libadwaita thing).
