My take is that Slashdot’s vision was of a single community, which limited its scale.

Reddit’s voting and moderation design is basically flawed, and the parts of that which Lemmy has copied are flawed in exactly the same way.

Any system that requires people to be in a position of power, yet not abuse that power, is broken.

I’m not saying that it’s the best solution, but when I used to use Slashdot, it seems like it would randomly ask people to moderate comments (who had opted in), rather than have preset moderators. And then presumably, they would collate the results of multiple moderators and use that to decide who could be trusted with more moderation.

This is one example of a method to avoid power tripping mods.

I don’t have context, but you might have been baited into that conversation by somebody whose goal was to get participants banned. The reason I say this is that it’s such a strange topic to start with. The two options don’t seem to have anything to do with each other, and both options are violent.

When asked about Musk and Huffman’s correspondence, Reddit spokesperson Gina Antonini sent the following statement: “We take any report of Reddit policy violations seriously, whether on Reddit directly or through other public or private means. We will evaluate content reported to us and take action if violating.”

There was a famous reddit user called Unidan who I think was a scientist that studied animals. His account was eventually banned for Terms of Service violations due to his having an account that posted comments, and several other accounts that were just used for voting. He used the other accounts to give his comments an initial voting boost, which was a policy violation, and was therefore permanently banned.

Anyways, I occasionally noticed a strange voting pattern on Reddit. I’d have one comment that had not gotten any votes or replies for hours after I wrote it, and then all of a sudden, somebody would reply to argue, and their reply would more-or-less instantly have several upvotes, and simultaneously, my comment would have a similar number of downvotes.

This person was obviously using multiple accounts, violating the Terms of Service just like Unidan, so I went to report them, only to find out that there was literally no way for me to report them. The report button didn’t have any fitting option, nor was it guaranteed to go to a reddit admin who could actually look at who voted for what. Mods can’t see comment votes. There was a separate webpage you could go to to contact the admins, but again, there was no category for it, and no way to make a report that didn’t fit those categories.

From that experience, it didn’t feel like they would “take any report of Reddit policy violations seriously.” How could they take the report seriously when they wouldn’t even take the report in the first place? Now I see I was supposed to directly contact Reddit CEO Steve Huffman through private messaging.

Why not just make your own subreddit then?

Even if you’re careful when writing your comment, it makes no difference if the admin reading your comment is not careful or has poor reading comprehension.

This is what happens when you have no rights and another person is given power over you. Even if they think they’re not being abusive, any small misunderstanding always ends in you being abused.

It says they use publicly exposed or leaked IAM keys with RW permission to do this, in case anybody is interested in how they get in.

Suspiciously similar to a trick parents use on their children. “Do you want to eat the peas first or the carrots first?” Gives them the illusion that they made a choice about what to eat.

That is one of the things the article says. That making certain parts of the processor bigger reduces error rates.

Don’t forget crypto currencies.

By these standards, most of my adult relatives are actually children.

The idea that a state government is unnecessarily at the mercy of any corporation is hard to comprehend. Especially, as in this case, a foreign corporation.

Open source shouldn’t only be the standard for governments. It should be the minimum requirement.

Another thing is that I feel like the era of the private phone number has passed. I see the use case for phone numbers for businesses, but people just don’t use them very much anymore otherwise.

Like, we don’t memorize them. We don’t dial them. They’re just entries in our contacts.

At this point, we could create an alternative way of contacting private phones. Something based on whitelisting instead of blacklisting. Something that can be easily shared but not easily guessed. Something that would be easy to trace who called you.

All of these phone scams rely on the idea that a stranger can just up and contact you without any effort. It’s ridiculous. If we got rid of that, we’d save people from untold billions of dollars of scams almost instantly.

My computer is good enough to run any games I want to play, even recently released FPS types of games at reasonably high settings. Still not good enough for Win11. My weak-ass tablet, though, was upgraded straight away.

Even people who build their own computers usually buy all the RAM they want at the time that they’re building it.

The biggest difference to them is likely the feeling that they’re losing their ability to upgrade, more than the actual upgrade itself. I still think that feeling is an important factor, though.

Do you remember a few years ago, it came out that some company was working on a new idea that, when you were given an advertisement on a TV, it could require you to say the product name aloud or it wouldn’t continue?

I try not to concede anything related to advertising because everything they want seems so dystopian.

This is kind of an intentional cognitive dissonance for Twitch due to its having a conflict of interests.

On the one hand, it wants to tell viewers and advertisers that it cracks down on adult only content.

But on the other hand, the more adult content they let through, the more money they make.

It would be very easy to either make an age restricted section where adult stuff would be allowed, or to completely banish streamers who are the modern equivalent of burlesque. But one is bad PR and the other is bad for revenue.

I read relatively slowly, but I have the ability to read much faster. I simply like reading more slowly. I have this weird suspicion that people who read very quickly are getting information more quickly, but that they’re either not absorbing it fully, or they’re not enjoying it as much as I do. But that’s obviously a biased perspective.
