Yeah it def is opt in. The only two default feeds you get are literally an algo free timeline and discover timeline, it defaults to the timeline iirc.
Sure, their discover tab is closed source algorithm but you don’t have to use it. In addition, you can create and import your own algorithms (which becomes necessary because you can’t follow hashtags, which is frustrating)
I don’t think there is a future without algorithms, but I do think it’s important to implement them in a way similar to how bsky did where they’re opt-in and configurable by individual users.
Probably won’t have one for a while. Pixelfed still doesn’t have one afaik and that’s another of their projects.

I use both Dropbox and iCloud to sync Obsidian vaults and have no issues. No need to pay their subscription in my experience.
I’ve been on mastodon for a couple of years and received my first like that just over the past week.
All of them?
this era of the internet was such a fun time.
The combination of having to choose an instance and then start with an algorithm free blank slate is a tough ask. It literally takes time to sit down and setup your initial “feed”, which is probably a good thing, but not at all what attracts users whimsical curiosities nor what they’ve experienced over their entire existence with social media.

The only time I think this is okay is when you’re in a heat wave and it’s gonna be too hot later in the day(s) to actually be out working in it.
Disappointing doesn’t even feel like a strong enough word.
The best way to protect kids is to stop having them.
Yeah especially without full feature parity with YouTube premium. This $7.99 price should omit music but everything else from premium should be included, and even that feels a little expensive.
I started a RDR2 play through a while back and I was shocked at how much content I was finding in Reddit comments for the random stuff I was looking up.
For certain niches over the past decade, it really is a treasure trove 😔
