There’s a perspective that some technologically literate people have (not all of them, certainly) that enables them a clearer view of what is going on re: tech oligarchs. That is how much we rely on other people’s computers. Most people don’t think about what is going on when they browse a website or post something on social media, set up their own shop on squarespace, sell a product on Amazon, stream music or TV or movies or games.
Giant tech companies own it all. They own the computer you use to do all these things. They own the computers other smaller businesses use to run their companies. You invented a product and want to drive your cart to the market square? Pay a tax to King Bezos, the market square is Amazon. Did you make a game? Pay Gaben and you can sell it at his marketplace. Don’t wanna use these marketplaces? Wanna set up your own shop? You still have to use Amazon’s, or Microsoft’s, or Google’s computers.
These tech oligarchs are more like feudal lords – enclosing lands (computers) and charging the peasants and merchants access to them.
I think of him as astoundingly stupid. But he ain’t dumb.
I think I have seen a similar issue. Mine is that sometimes my firefox gets stuck in the background and I can click the icon in my dock to maximize it. Nothing happens. I have to hit the Windows key to view all my windows in that particular workspace, then click firefox to get it to the front. Sometimes it doesn’t work and I have to close out Firefox and reopen. Is that similar to what you’re seeing ?
As another has said, strengthen your local ties. In the event of a collapse, we’re all going to be affected in one way or another. I think the biggest thing is fostering a culture of cooperation rather the competition. That means avoid prepping, avoid emptying store shelves, avoid hoarding goods en masse in your basement or shelter.
I think a good first step would be to look for local mutual aid groups. Just Google your town or state + “mutual aid”. These groups are already out there directly servicing those most in need, and are the most ready to spring into action when a disaster strikes (here is some testimony about mutual aid group action during Hurricane Helene)
Oftentimes these groups are open to volunteers or donations and will be active during natural catastrophes, and I’d imagine economic ones as well.
For me, the grim outlook began when studies kept trying to cash in on the stories I loved, and continually ruined them. Games, TV, Movies. Enshittification started there, imo. It makes sense, really, for the product to be mediocre or even bad. And it makess sense why conservatives are so obsessed about efficiency. An efficiently made product is the worst possible version of the product that the market continues to accept.
Ahh. Well, you gave me a chuckle so thanks for that and have a great day!
Alright, sure… we’ll just move past it then lol
“This is not the platform to discuss organizing,” communism@lemmy.ml said.
Obviously there is more to their comment, and they are totally right. But it’s ironic because it subverts your expectation of what a user called communism@lemmy.ml would say
You don’t see the irony there? In your username being communism@lemmy.ml and your comment being
I’m politically active in several local organisations and if I have anything to discuss about that I discuss it with them, not with random people on social media. This is just not the platform for that.
It just tickles my humor. Its not a dig at you or anything. Local organization is most effective.
I think you’re right but I just keep chuckling at the irony behind your username and then your comment haha
I feel that way as well
I find it rude when people on the bus put their bag on the empty seat next to them, so that you have to ask them to move it when there are no empty rows left. It’s strangely hostile to me.
I think its just polite to leave your bag off the seat until the bus is boarded.
Smoking…what?
Mind me asking how you get access to deadlock? I wanna give it a shot, too.
Thanks :)
What are you playing, bpt11?
Just started Baldur’s Gate 3. Never played a CRPG before (does Disco Elysium count?) so it has been quite the learning curve for combat. Pretty stuck in the Underdark, it seems. Looks like I’ll have to help out a slavetrader Gekh in order to proceed because I don’t think I can defeat him and his buddies…
Hackers acting as if they’re doing a public service by bringing down a free publicly accessible tool is a new level of assbackwardness.
If the goal really was to force IA to increase their security, they would’ve tried to consult with them. This is more about notoriety and chaos and the hackers have no moral ground to stand on.
I didn’t read the Zahir but I felt like The Alchemist was a shallow Siddhartha-wannabe when I read it. I couldn’t help but think it was trying too hard to be profound
Darktable is a godsend to me for converting film negatives. But I pretty much only use image conversion, RGB curve, then fidget with the exposure and RGB sliders in negadoctor a little more then I’m done. No idea how to do anything else.
