  • What the hell kind of Joe Rogan bullshit is primarying your own incumbent?

You know what happens when you switch leaders like they did? Guaranteed loss. It’s a trend, and it’s 100% so far. Running a primary would be even worse; the gop’s wet dream. Political suicide.

The Veep was the only choice. I’m sorry people couldn’t get behind Harris and needed to choose her exact opposite, and if it’s not the character, intellect, background or achievement differences, it was some other … difference.

You decide what marked difference between her and Trump made an elitist scumbag the better candidate, on any metric possible.

I’ve asked questions on S.O. I’ve answered some too.

What I’ve found works well on s-o is

    1. Researching a bit first
    2. Asking a question properly*
    3. Including that search attempt to prove you’ve done some due-diligence

I’ve found even a dick like me can get a lot of leeway by showing I’ve put in the effort and asked properly.

  • I worked next to a technical writer for Unix; the Unix. One of the things we were known for, actually, was the amazing documentation. This guy and both teams of writers (that many) maintained the doc as their entire job. It was written well, it was spell-checked, it was accurate, it was accessible. If you installed the machine, it was on http://localhost/doc or so.

Almost all tech writers were turfed after Y2K. They cost money and didn’t earn directly.

If you notice a lack of good docco like you notice a lack of mentoring in code dev (I see you, Systemd), then we know how we got to this stage.

If you become CEO, just keep that in mind.

  • Instead of using old proprietary shit you could use Linux or *BSD with a vintage desktop environment and have a blast

I’m not sure you get it.

The CnC operator, for instance, didn’t choose windows; they chose the CnC machine because it’s best at making wood into shapes they need. It came with ‘a computer’ to control it. That computer had a desktop and an icon.

You see how CHOOSING THE OS wasn’t on the list? They chose - and fucking get this - A CNC MACHINE out of a printed catalogue with a 30-word write-up. The number of CnC machines with a Unix or Linux or BSD or BeOS install on them in 2000 was - drumroll please - zero.

If you want to fix that, you’re going to need a time machine. Remember to bring your flag with you.

    Go learn about ReactOS, too.

  • I’m not here to influence things. I was in the thick of it for a bit, but I’m here now.

I love coding. I get to do it for money. It allows me a nice little apartment in a nice environment and with my wife chipping in her half we’re a little insulated from financial strife. A little.

That’s it. I code, I eat food and live with a beautiful girl who seems to care for me, and we occasionally get to go see family or a strange new place. I’m flying as close to the sun as I dare.

Find peace in your existence and enjoy what you’re doing, whether programming is the bread or it’s the butter. It’s all a means to an end of doing something you love for what little time we have here.

  • Survivor bias aside, I’m not sure the UI doesn’t make this drive-by trolling worse. The reddit UI (hi Lemmy) is threaded but disjoint, and the excellent response to one tree of responses isn’t useful to or seen in another tree – and those trees will develop in parallel in almost every discussion.

I worry that quips and cheap takes stand out because they’re fast and block actual discussion more, so have that mock ‘finalising’ effect. Ending a discussion thread is not concluding it .

… and we all have that cousin whom no one invites anywhere because he’ll argue the shit out of something like a jackal worrying a carcass, until people just give up and let him wander smugly off to his little corner in contrarian triumph.
