Either to be a rockstar or a game developer or an author / journalist.
I am not a number.
Either to be a rockstar or a game developer or an author / journalist.
Either either or either, depending on maybe the context or the phonetics of words used. Kinda like how you say the or the depending on if the next word starts with a vowel or not.
Not quite as bad as 20 in 2 days but basically any time I get a phone call, it’s probably safe to say that it’s someone trying to sell me something. It especially sucks when you’ve been handing out your CV and applying for jobs and shit, so you have to answer calls from unknown numbers. But if it’s anyone that I actually know, they’ll use WhatsApp.
Yeah, every time I see people saying that they like the amount of users now just makes me think “hmmm must be nice that all of your particular niches and tastes are accounted for”. It’s pretty silly to be so anti growth for this place anyway. Even on Reddit, you literally have a choice to take part in the bigger ‘default’ subs or find a smaller one if that suits you. And I like choice.
This place still has a long way to go IMO. I’m starting to resort to lurking chat / ask style communities more just for something to do around here and even there, it’s not quite as engaging or active as it should be. As a humble user, sometimes I don’t have something particular in mind that I want to see. Sometimes I just want to bed rot and scroll and read people’s stories and discussions, maybe give my two cents if I feel so inclined. And there isn’t really that here yet because once you’ve checked AskLemmy or whatever, you’ve already seen 90% of the content for the next week.
Just to add for information’s sake, it works the other way around too. As in, you can use Fennec instead of Firefox Android and still sync with standard Firefox on desktop. Or Librewolf or whatever. I think most forks probably use the same sync functionality and servers as vanilla Firefox.
Wake me up when something gets done about it other than a fine that amounts to about half a day’s profit for them.
The only two that I ever still make use of are XDA for custom firmwares and other Android related shit. And Pokecommunity for the ROM hacking / decompilation stuff.
I definitely understand the aversion to algorithms because just look at what platforms like Facebook, Twitter or even Reddit these days do with them. In the wrong hands, it’s deceptive and dodgy as fuck.
But I wouldn’t be opposed to an algorithm that you can tailor yourself. And I don’t mean Bluesky style ‘tailoring’, I mean give us a list of interests and categories to toggle that then have more weight in the feed. So for example, if you like metal, you would then see more metal related stuff in your feed and not have it downed out by Taylor Swift and Kanye West because upvotes.
And something I picked up from Facebook (even though it doesn’t work for shit on Facebook because their algorithm is mentally handicapped) is being able to ‘favourite’ something. And by doing that, not just pinning it to the top of the list of communities but actually making it appear in your feed more whether the upvotes are a high amount or not.
There was also a way to build Infinity yourself using your own developer key from Reddit, not sure if that’s still an option though. But that dev was very quick with a work around and Infinity users are barely affected by the API thing.
That women’s stuff community that you helped promote already has some jackass commenting about it being “pointlessly gendered”. Meanwhile ‘Dull Gentleman’s Club’ doesn’t get the same treatment for some strange reason, I wonder why. Honestly this is one case where I hope the moderators do a little power tripping so that these kinds of communities can actually take off without the usual suspects dropping by to shit on them.
MAGA style ‘free speech’ where we’re all free to have the opinions of right wing christian bigots forced onto us but speaking out against right wing christian bigots is ‘hate speech’ or ‘wishing harm’ or whatever other fucking excuse they can come up with.
Damn, that definitely looks very cool. Probably expensive too lol. But exactly what these touchscreen phones need.
Especially for gaming. My old Nokia N81 kicked this rectangular piece of glass’s ass when it comes to gaming because I could actually comfortably play games that weren’t turn based and didn’t need to slap an overlay onto the screen.
Yeah there’s no good reason for a limit. Having no character limit doesn’t stop people from making short posts if they want. If they don’t want long posts taking up half the page, then they should just hide the rest of the text behind a ‘see more’ prompt once it goes over 300 characters.
On a platform like Bluesky I can kinda understand if they limited replies to posts to 300 characters, so that people don’t get walls of text in their inboxes but the original top post should be unlimited IMO.
Haha thanks! I’ve been lurking a fair amount. Just a little more distracted currently.
Having not been using this place as regularly for the last couple of weeks, it definitely looks like there’s more upvotes on posts now in general compared to when I started up here about two months ago. Even just before this latest Reddit fuck up, it looks a lot to me like there’s been a steady influx lately. Like suddenly noticing that the grass has got longer.
I used to think a future with cyborgs would be pretty cool but personally, I’m not so hot on the idea anymore. The problem is that you would be beholden to whichever corporation or government manufactures and pays for parts. And who is to say that the support for whichever product that you’ve surgically implanted will be for life, and that you won’t end up with useless landfill electronics sewed up inside of you.
Personally I think that if AI was ever made with altruistic purposes, that could fill the role of things like complex calculations and extra memory or a log. And good Augmented Reality could fill the role of interacting directly with entertainment and blocking out the outside world. And maybe one day there would be effective ways of interacting directly with computers through electrodes or even wirelessly. Although who knows how our privacy would be invaded then. There could be literal thought police in that case.
The problem is that the tech will always come from someone else. Imagine integrating this kind of tech into your life on such a deep level and then the person in charge of over seeing and maintaining this tech turns out to be an authoritarian nazi.
Yeah it’s nice to be able to import your list of subscriptions at least. But for comment history, I guess it depends what you’re getting out of a place like this. On Reddit, I liked going back sometimes and seeing what I was posting a couple of years ago. Especially if it’s personal shit, or even old review posts for movies or whatever. I like having a stable online presence or identity with a history to refer to.
[Removed by Reddit]
Been a minute since I’ve seen that. And that’s actually one huge advantage of the Fediverse. There can’t be a [Removed by Lemmy] because ‘Lemmy’ is a federation of servers with their own rules and regulations and aren’t even all based in the USA. And if any server starts these shenanigans, you can just move to another.
Although I do wish that profiles and comment history could be preserved from one server to another. That’s basically the last piece of the puzzle that would give the user a completely a completely free experience.
This guy is so behind the curb. Doesn’t he know that the latest fad is
NFTs and blockchainAI?
