Damn it. Alt account here I come. Thanks again!

I thought they were coming at me a bit hard, they just wanted to argue with (and insult) me about anything they could. But tbh I can be a bit sensitive so I held off banning them for longer than I might have done if another user reported them for the same thing. Thank you for the reassurance that I wasn’t being reactionary because my feelings were hurt.
I don’t know what I’m missing but I can’t see options to delete/ban while browsing. I usually browse from IOS apps and open lemmy in my phone browser to mod but I used my laptop for this and still couldn’t see it. Also, I’m only given the option to ban for a set number of days, there’s no permaban option. Do I just put a high 4 digit number in?
I will definitely join the mod support you mentioned, and again, thank you for your help!
Thank you for that! I don’t understand all of those terms but I got the gist! For what my opinion is worth, I think blocking a user as a mod should only block them from communities you don’t moderate. Or moderators should be advised to create separate mod/user accounts.
Do you know what happens if someone I’ve previously blocked, then posts to a community I moderate? I was a user before I was a mod and blocked unpleasant people. Could they be making posts or commenting on threads within my communities and I’m not even seeing them? That really interferes with my ability to mod.
I haven’t modded on another site before and I was starting to wonder how people do it! When I initially tried to ban the user I was only offered the option to block them, presumably because no one had reported their comments. That prevented me from seeing the comments that needed to be deleted. I had to unblock the user, report their comments myself (from my mod account, reporting them to me) and then delete the rule breaking comments and ban them.
For the sake of transparency I’d rather not use a different account to comment on posts in my communities, but if I have to then so be it. I’ll use the same username on a different instance. I feel like I should be able to delete comments or ban subscribers while browsing posts from my mod account though. Reporting comments to myself seem ridiculously inefficient.
Thanks for your suggestion!
You have to have an instagram account in order to have a threads account - it’s how you log in. I think whatever your Instagram handle is becomes your threads handle, or it’s saved for you.
I wanted to see what it was like so I created a new Instagram account (not linked to any of my real personal info) and then a new threads account. I had a look for a couple of days and decided it was dogshit so I deleted both. I suspect an awful lot of people did exactly that.
Thank you. It’s been over a month and still haven’t quite got my head round the fediverse!
It’s not lemmy as a whole is it? I thought the main url is lemmy.org. It’s only a couple of instances that used .ml.
I messaged the mods of two subreddits saying “hey, I’ve left this shithole and moved to lemmy. I’ve opened this community there and if you’d like to mod it I’m happy to add you. Just let me know.” No response. I don’t think you can be much fairer than that.
There’s two communities I opened that had existing but inactive communities on lemmy. Again I messaged them saying “do you plan on adding content to get this sub going? If not I’m happy take over for you. Meanwhile I’ve started an alternative. I’d prefer to combine the two communities than have competing ones, let me know what you’d prefer.” Again no response, so I created my own.
I don’t particularly want to be a mod, but the stubborn part of me doesn’t want to put all the legwork into building up a community that has an inactive/uninterested mod.
I mod a couple of communities I missed from Reddit. I’ve been stealing content from there to get the communities going (using the dystopia app so no ads and I don’t interact with Reddit at all). It’s honestly a bit jarring to read the nastiness/aggression in the comments after 5 weeks on lemmy. It’s so much nicer here, I hope we don’t lose that vibe completely as lemmy grows.
I think this is the same guy who was arrested by his own police force not long ago for “trespassing”. The guy walked down the driveway of a house he thought was abandoned, the homeowner saw him, grabbed his gun and held him at knife point until the police arrived and arrested him. I’ll see if I can’t find a link.
Edit: I was thinking of another (acting) black mayor of a southern state who’s being stymied by his racist colleagues. https://www.nbcnews.com/news/amp/rcna93318
You’re commenting in a community called “Reddit”…
I tried to sign up just now but it’s US only. I don’t have a TV at all, I can’t afford one. I’d love this.
“Everything happens for a reason”
“God doesn’t give you more than you can handle”
Here’s the top comment and a few replies. There’s a lot like this:
You’re just taking coins, that we’ve paid cash for, with no consideration? Not even going to give us the equivalent value in premium time for our existing coins and coins we are going to end up not getting?
What a shit way to do things. It’s like they want to alienate the users who gave them money in the past
Exactly, this genuinely is the worst way I have EVER been scammed in my entire life.
I don’t recall being particularly bored but I do recall taking a book absolutely everywhere with me. I can remember arguing with my parents because they’d only let me pack 7 hardback library books in my suitcase for a two week holiday when I was about 8!
I believe the tracker guy posts with a delay too, so by the time anyone sees it on threads, Elon will have already gone.
From what I understand deleted comments can and are being restored by mods. You’re better off editing your comments and either leaving them with gibberish or whatever, or editing them and then deleting them. If Reddit restore them it will only be able to restore the latest edit, so they’d just be restoring gibberish.
Your original posts will probably still be around somewhere on an archive site, but Reddit can’t make money from those sites so it doesn’t help them.
Ooh my first fediverse block! What a sad individual. Anyways…
There’s no Reddit without users. And archive sites don’t allow Reddit to profit from ads. The information will still be out there somewhere if someone wants to read your old posts badly enough, but Reddit won’t profit from your contributions - which is exactly what they should expect after showing their utter disregard for the people who made them money.
I don’t. On safari iOS and chrome on MacBook I click the three dots and see this:
There’s only the option to block or report, not remove or ban. I tried it on more than one comment. Interestingly I am given ban and remove options on the Lemmios app:
These are using the same account, viewing the same thread on the same community. Maybe it’s a lemmy.world problem?
