Technology@lemmy.world•Utah first state to hold websites liable for users who mask their location with VPNs — law goes into effect, designed to prevent bypassing age checksEnglish
9·1 month agoYeah, I was wondering how on earth this would work. If my organization doesn’t operate or host in Utah and they file suit against me why wouldn’t I tell them to pound sand?

7·2 months agoApropos to absolutely nothing, what countries do y’all use when torrenting with a vpn?
If you prefer this particular dystopian vision with chuckles, Rifftrax did it and was pretty good as I recall.
God I love SCP so much. Probably why I loved Control so much, it was like playing SCP: The Game or something.
- Hackers
- Kiki’s Delivery Service
- Whisper of the Heart
- Star Trek IV
Honorable mention: The Search for Animal Chin

Lots of great advice here but this stands out as a really good bit that a lot of people (including myself) need to consider.
Weekend proooojeeeeeect! 🎵
I was really enjoying wallabag for a while, but after an update (or something?) the container no longer connects to the db and I haven’t been smart enough to figure out why yet.
BUT when it works it’s got a nice interface and the Firefox extension clips articles quickly. Biggest downside I’ve run into is the iOS app can’t make highlights or annotations, and it sometimes randomly reloads an article while reading and ‘forgets’ its place.

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•What was hacking like in the '80s and '90s?
9·8 months ago“Draper heard about the whistle from other phreakers. The whistle easily played at 2600Hz, the perfect tone to, in Apple Inc. [co-founder Steve Wozniak’s words], “seize a phone line.”
Huh, I had always wondered why the hacking magazine was called 2600. Guess that explains it, neat!

31·10 months agoManual ordering of images in albums is an absolute must before I adopt any image management system. It’s wierd to me that seemingly none of the FOSS systems support it (considering that most of us are datahoading control freaks).

2·1 year agoI just spun up Wallabag on my server the other day to replace Omnivore. Im going to take a look at this, but does anyone have experience or thoughts on how this compares? I’m not so deep into it yet that I couldn’t switch to Linkwarden if it’s better.
My main uses would be archiving articles and highlighting passages.

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•Non-Americans who have been to the US.. What is the weirdest thing about America that Americans don't realize is weird?
10·2 years agoYeah but how do you consult those rules? How often are they updated? How do you get notified of updates?
The fact that there are no answers to these questions and therefore everyone is working with mismatching rule sets makes the whole thing useless. You can be totally well meaning and still piss off a server because somehow you don’t know what the currently acceptable magic number is.
I recently visited the states for the first time in a decade and didn’t find out until afterwards that 15% is now considered by some people to be “low”. Sorry everyone who I tipped, I shafted you without realizing it. 🤷♂️
