that site is odd… looks like we have to go to https://lemmyverse.net/ and THEN click “communities”…

Yeah, feeds are neat bc they’re user-curated, they’re easy to copy, and you can easily tell which communities are active.
Your proximetry metrics is a good idea too, I bet it would work best in a tool like the Lemmy Explorer: https://lemmyverse.net/communities
Here’s my approach: over the holidays I suggested lemmy to 3 people I know. I did so by emailing or texting them links to the following piefed feeds of lemmy communities:
The first is non-political, non-tech, low-meme communities (tho sometimes those topics sneak in.) The second is non-political, non-tech meme/humor communities. One peson said they thought it was neat, the other said they bookmarked it, the third didn’t say anything. Dunno if they joined.

it’s kinda frustrating bc all you need to do is go to one of the sources here:
https://lemmy.world/comment/12653544 grab a cartoon, and post. Many posts got well over 100 upvotes. Unfortunately I’m maxed out on how much I can currently contribute to things.
FYI check out pixelfed. Here’s a preview: https://pixelfed.social/web/explore
It’s basically a replacement for Insta rather than Threads, but the upside is it tends to be less technical. Also iirc it includes all the image posts from Mastodon. If you create an account, click on “Global Feed” and start following individuals and hashtags.

3·4 months agoPiefed is awesome. I really like Scheduled Posts, as well as Feeds (which are collections of communities). There are only a couple reasons why keep my lemmy.world account: uploading images in comments is difficult in piefed, and I don’t think piefed supports custom preview for youtube videos yet. But I imagine those will be fixed at some point in the near future.

4·5 months agoThere are countless other ‘niche’ communities that have no posts for months, however.
Hey, have you seen !fedigrow@lemmy.zip? It’s got a lot of discussions on how to handle this.
I think that to grow a niche community, you need at least 2-3 regular posters, and you need to make posts that encourage discussion (i.e. ask questions or provoke a thoughtful reaction that readers would like to share.)

Fediverse@lemmy.world•Is the amount of Lemmy activity declining?English
18·5 months agoAlso keep an eye on: https://piefed.fediverse.observer/stats A couple thousand people (and several communities) moved there after lemm.ee died, but we interact with lemmy.
As for why it subjectively seems to be declining… maybe you know what you’re gonna see in New, and so you engage less with posts? Maybe it’s time to be more of a poster!

Fwiw whenever I tell my friends about us, I point them to my feeds of lemmy communities with less politics and tech:
