As I mentioned, I didn’t really know where to post it. I guess my lemmy-foo isn’t up to snuff. I saw that this appears to be in lemmy.world, but only 10 options came up when I tried to post and none of them really seemed right. Advice?

Thank you for the thorough response. After looking carefully at what you wrote I didn’t really see a difference between the term self-hosting and home network.

You said you have software that automatically downloads media. The way I see this using movies for instance, if I own the movies and have them on my machine, then I can stream them over my network and have full control. Whereas if I “own” them on Amazon and steam it from there, they can track the viewing experience, push ads, or even remove the content completely. I understand that… But if I want a NEW movie, I’m back to Amazon to get it in the first place (or Netflix, or Walmart, etc. I get it). I’m fact, personally I’ve started actually buying disks of the movies/music I like most so that it can’t really be taken away and I can enjoy it even without an Internet connection. Am I missing something? Unless of course the media you are downloading is pirated.

I know I’m asking what seems to be a huge question but I’m really only asking for a broad description, sort of an ELI5 thing.

Wow! Thank you all for the civilized responses. This all sounds so great. I am older and I feel like I’ve already seen enough ads for one lifetime and I hate all this fascist tracking crap.

But how does that work? Is it just a network on which you store your stuff in a way that you can download it anywhere or can it do more? I mean, to me that’s just a home network. Hosting sounds like it’s designed for other people to access. Can I put my website on there? If so, how do I go about registering my domain each year. I’m not computer illiterate but this sounds kind of beyond my skill level. I’ll go search Jellyfin, weird name, and see what I can find. Thanks again!

You’re right. Probably you would see one. But a lot of people just go to work and go home and go to work and go home. It is possible not to see one in person for a long time, but admittedly maybe not 10 years. Seeing it on the news is a different thing. I meant in person. I’ve seen them many times but, for instance, the last time I saw one, I was playing putt putt golf and they had some babies in a little pond out front that you could feed (436 in Orlando actually). So not, you know, in your house, or under your car. I’ve lived here virtually all of my life and never once had one surprise me in my swimming pool, in the yard or anything like that. That’s what I was actually referring to. Should have been more specific.

I know what you mean. I live in Florida and people always mention alligators. Truth is you can go a decade and never even see a gator. When you finally do, it’s probably in a zoo or something. I mean you do hear stories and it’s no surprise because you live in Florida. That’s where they are.

But Australia sounds like a whole nother level. I mean you guys have a venemous ant for crying out loud AND it’s aggressive. I mean the shear concentration of things that can kill you down there is off the charts. Crocs, box jellyfish, snakes, spiders even friggin kangaroos! Am I wrong?

Are you sure? In Australia from what I’ve heard, I’m pretty sure it could bite through your skull and lay it’s eggs in there.

But if you were in Australia, you SHOULD be worried about your safety with something like that on your ceiling

I was an engineer. I worked with four different companies, but the work was substantially the same, working in front of a computer.

For me, it was my hips. I really do think sitting for long periods in front of a computer is really bad for your health. Good luck to you. Get lots of exercise and take as many breaks as you can get away with.

I’m already waiting for my interview. But it’s more than that. It’s having to go through it at all. It’s their treatment of people. It’s the super spreader event that is an aircraft and an airport. It’s the treatment of people by the airlines and the whole schedule thing. It’s dealing with other passengers. I live in Florida, yup the crazy one. In the last four flights I’ve taken it took 20 hours to get home from Canada, 36 hours to get home from Tennessee and 15 hours to get home from Colorado. I mean WTF!

I took a private airplane once and I parked for free at Signature services, walked into a, large mostly empty lobby area with free cookies and got on the plane. When I got back, the crew, and I swear I’m not making it up, actually brought out a red carpet. It was ridiculously short, like 2 feet, with a ridiculously short velvet rope to match it. I walked through the same lobby, grabbed a cookie and hopped in my car and went home. That was it. Friggin fantastic. I do admit this was prior to 9/11. Since I’m not privy to such treatment normally I’ve never taken another private flight so I don’t know how much has changed. But THAT’S the way to travel… unless the OP meant something like a teleporter instead.

Also I’m not sure it’s borderline extortion. Feels like flat out extortion, but I see your point.
