There’s too much instance tribalism around here, which isn’t great. I totally get defederating from stuff that’s harmful, but sometimes it’s down to political stances. People hate China, Russia and communism so they hate ML. Engaging in other communities as an ML user you will invariable just see people say “oh here comes the tankie” even though you said nothing tankie-ish.

I’m not as extreme left as a lot of users in ML but i like to listen and i find common ground with people here in many issues. I feel that disagreeing politically is just not a good enough reason to block or defederate. At this point we’ll end up with echo chambers that lack any semblance of political plurality of opinions. Ignoring people who lean differently doesn’t make them disappear at the voting tables, it just hides one’s head under the sand.

  • I did not meant to come across as saying that HDDs don’t suffer bit rot. However, there are specific long term storage HDDs that are built specifically to be powered up sporadically and resist external magnetic influences on the track. In a proper storage environment they will last over 5 years without being powered up and still retain all information. I know it because i use them in this exact scenario for over 2 decades. Conversely there are no such long term storage SSDs.

SSDs store information through trapped charges which most certainly lose charge through quantuum tunneling as well as generalized charge leakage. As insulation loses effectiveness, the potential barrier for the charge allows for what is normally a manageable effect, much like in the CPU like you said, to become out of the scope of error correction techniques. This is a physical limitation that cannot be overcome.

  • My theory is the following, i think what saved the US from being stuck on cold war propaganda was the internet. For a long time the US was truly great. It was a steadfast ally, a reliable trade partner and it helped rebuild the EU post WW2. It had railroads everywhere, cable cars everywhere, struggled and won against prohibition and oligarchs, treading ground on worker’s rights and rights of minorities.

Then the cold war came and things went seriously downhill. Because of the cold war a lot of things were done in secret and a lot was invested in propaganda. Corporations were allowed to do many things in secret. People in the US were told they were the best at everything and everyone else sucked. They never heard what the world really did think of them, only here and there by immigrants, who were seen as an inferior class anyway.

Then the internet came and finally the US heard what the world thinks of them and boy, it wasn’t pretty. Took a while too, many places didn’t have the infrastructure ready. The world wasn’t happy, the US had been doing very bad things in secret and so, US people finally saw what their country leaders had been doing.

The US isn’t a hopeless case but the US is at war with itself. A war that started in the 1800s and still rages on against an oligarch class that managed to inflitrate itself within the higher echelons of the government. Who took their railways away and their cable cars. Who took their days off and their workers rights and in some cases, even took away their right to strike (like the railroad workers).

They can’t vote their way out of this, both parties are deeply corrupt. The ones that could stop it, the regulatory agencies, are currently being gutted out. Now is a critical time for the US to change and make regulatory organs apolitical and independent from the executive branch. What is done now will define if the US will become an oligarchic dystopia or will return to its roots. I believe the destruction caused by Trump will invariably lead to the demise of the oligarchy, for oligarchy persists in denial and secret and what Trump is doing is reckless and obvious. But a time of shame has come to the US for what has been done.

Once people in the US realize that the bipartisan struggle is an artificial struggle and that no president is coming to save them, republican or democrat, hopefully protests will spring up everywhere and when they start, real meaninful change can appear. Every American knows the establishment is everywhere. Every American knows they’re in a class war.

Every American wants to fight it, but the Republicans say Democrats are the establishment and the Democrats say Republicans are the establishment. To overcome this both Republicans and Democrats must recognize they are fighting the same enemy and it’s not each other. The republican party and the democrat party are both artificial constructs of many political views that don’t translate to anything in the real world of politics. They’re amalgamations of parties that have differing political views who might win elections but won’t effect meaningful change on account of that. It serves the interest of the oligarchs that no matter which party wins, they win.

  • Fyi the syncthing-fork guy (catfriend1) who’s still updating has a donating button on F-droid via Liberapay. It’s up to you if your financial situation allows you to donate, but the more of us help the remaining developers for their time, in particular those of us that rely so much on their work, the better off we’ll be. Let’s give them a little motivation to keep working on this.

FYI2 syncthing-fork (as written and confirmed in this thread) has an import button for your folders from syncthing Android.

  • I still fondly remember my first perma ban. It was 3 months after signing up, commenting on stories on offmychest. The user was talking about her own infidelity and i told her cheating was wrong and she should just break up to prevent causing unnecessary suffering.

Mods banned me for not being supportive enough. Muted me when i asked about it. Looking back i should have stopped using the website then and there, because it only went downhill from there. At one point i was permabanned off a dozen subreddits i wasn’t a part of because i was discussing with anti covid vaxxers about their misinformation and other subreddits said i was participating in subreddits responsible for misinformation and thus, was permabanned from their subreddits now too. The anti vaxxing subreddit didn’t ban me, even though i was against everything they stood for, but they were banned by admins later on.

The straw that broke the camel’s back was when i was in a news subreddit and a user posted a story with a clickbaity title. I said the title was clickbaity and i spoiled the bait by answering the clickbait on the title. The mods permabanned me and i mod mailed them and said it was ridiculous to ban me for such a frivolous thing. Mods reported me for harassment and admin gave me a 3 day ban. I deleted my account and just stuck to Lemmy ever since, where i haven’t been banned even once in a year.

That folks is the 4 year long, 10k karma reddit experience nowadays.

  • I honestly can’t understand that. Discussion boards are where opposing views come to clash. That’s what creates meaningful dialogue. I am politically centrist and i find myself sometimes agreeing and disagreeing with the left and the right. What these people mean about “right wing hives” is forums where conservative opinions exist.

If we’re just creating spaces that share only one political ideology, where we ban everyone disagreeing, how can we ever learn from each other ? What value is there in spaces where opinions are homogeneous and we only see people shouting opinions over the wall to the other group ? It’s just a circlejerk at that point, and i have nothing against circlejerk per se, it’s just that politics is very ill fitting for such types of forums.

Since the times of Greek democracies and republics, disagreement and factionalism has been a part of growth for political discourse. I believe we shouldn’t shy away from that at all.

  • Mods absolutely made reddit unusable for me. I mainly lurk in the news subreddits and they’re all the same. I got perma banned and instantly muted on some news subreddit i don’t really recall for saying an article’s title was clickbait. I got perma banned on worldnews and news for different instances of criticizing Israel.

I even tried using the platform to do other non politics things, like commenting on those am i wrong type of subreddits and got perma banned for not being supportive. Got banned in about half a dozen, despite never being there, for commenting on other subreddits.

I honestly cannot understand how people use the site without being permabanned nearly everywhere. You don’t even need to be combative. They use permaban for literally any minor infringement or disagreement that turns up and then mute you if you try to discuss it. It’s so frustrating. Thank goodness for Lemmy. There’s a lot of weird propaganda here, but at least you’re not permabanned.

Everywhere little by little is becoming like this. Youtube keyword snipes your comment and never tells you anything about it. It’s hard to find places to discuss the hard subjects now. Everything is for the advertisers.

  • It might sound like a pretty obvious thing, but have you tried changing the tools into the “Tabbed ribbon” that office uses instead of the classic old 90s organization scheme in options ?

I have come to notice that when people who don’t really work with computers very well, in particular boomers, say that they can’t stand LibreOffice, they mean they don’t like the layout of the tools, because they can’t find anything they need. I suppose they just got used to where everything is with modern office.

Just change it and see if she will like it better. Usually solves it for the boomers i help. Nothing is holding LibreOffice back more than their default layout scheme. They really don’t know their target audience’s pain points AT ALL. Just goes to show why you need to study your users using the product without being explained anything.

I don’t get why their default is a layout that has been outdated for 24 years. Nostalgia or what? Only really old people who used computers in the 90s a lot will intuitively find it useful.
