16·1 day agoThat’s not totally fair to Cleveland. They terminated the contract, Flock just kept right on recording. The same thing happened in many other cities. When maintenance crews service the lights, they should remove the cameras. Keep them in storage until Flock comes to get them.

Technology@lemmy.world•U.S home battery installations hit record high on rising electricity costs | Record home battery installations unlock options for grids—and AI data centers.English
15·3 days agoSame here. We not only got a rate increase notification but also “demand pricing”. Higher rates from 4 pm to 9 pm, which is a bigger hike than the rate increase. Once again undermining people with grid tie systems, which fall off after 4 pm. They’re diabolical. It may be a bit paranoid but my plan is to go solar and use the grid for backup power.

34·3 days agoI started my battery installation months before electricity costs started escalating. Going to finish it up phase I this week. It’s not the kind that connects to the grid. Just don’t trust the electric company.

Technology@lemmy.world•Employers who laid off workers citing AI are already starting to regret itEnglish
24·4 days agoThis is not new. Went through the same thing when employers were offshoring development to low wage countries. Some people in the management chain were so up on that, they joked we were all going to get fired. But I had seen the code. It wasn’t long before they were coming to me to get it fixed because it was their ass if they couldn’t get it sorted. My superpower was untangling Bangalore Spaghetti Code.

I have Ubuntu running with a sound bar and monitor that only pulls 40 watts. My processor is one of those vanilla box mini computers…GMKTech. I’m able to run it off a 1 kwh solar power station and it lasts a laughably long time. How much more efficiency do you need? I have fans that use more power than my desktop.

Technology@lemmy.world•AI companies are learning an ironic lesson as the people they pay to improve their chatbots are just feeding AI slop into themEnglish
811·8 days agoHow did they not see that coming? AI could have been a handy tool as a wingman handling small, repetitive tasks. Instead we get a giant mess that expensive and not terribly useful. To me it’s like EVs. Which would have been great second around town cars until the infrastructure could catch up.

10·16 days agoSpent the last couple weeks moving my stuff off Chrome. Not convenient but well worth the effort. If you’re not on Chrome they’re doing us a favor. Sites will be less likely to target ad blockers if the majority of users don’t have them installed.

It really wasn’t that hard to see the SpaceX ipo was mostly a scam. And yet there are post after post of people losing their entire fortune, house, future after investing in this sow. Just blinding stupidity to invest in any company run by a ketamine addict who should be in prison over that DOGE bullshit.
