  • There’s a hardline belief that any business is automatically more efficient than government because if it weren’t it would die from competition, period, end of story. The real equation is that companies are as inefficient as they can afford to be, and the bigger ones can afford plenty. In one of my jobs my manager gave me maybe 2 or 3 weeks of actual work to do in 6 months. In another my team was told to hold off starting a project because there was a change of plan and they didn’t know exactly what they wanted. So we just screwed around for a couple months. I won’t say what company but in both cases it rhymed with Bicrosoft.

  • When my daughter and her best friend were like 14 they baked a cake together, and we plunged a giant chef’s knife into it from the top and took a picture of them looking at it close-up. The lighting on their faces was perfect. I wanted them to send it to Cake because it would have made a kickass CD cover, but I don’t think they did.

  • Because other sites still haven’t ramped up enough in specialized areas to provide anywhere near reddit’s level of interaction. If I’m stumped by some technical problem in a DIY project or my various niche hobbies, I can ask a question there and usually get good answers fast. Hopefully lemmy will be there eventually, but for now lots of communities with thousands of members on reddit have hundreds or dozens on lemmy.

Having said that, if they make Old Reddit unusable, as someone suggested might soon happen, I’m out.
