Very nice explanation and only nitpicking, but saying that Thorium is much much safer than uranium implies that uranium nuclear plants are unsafe. In reality uranium nuclear power has one of the best safety records in energy production.

It seems like you don’t care about what people think, conditional on them being somewhat accepting of your choices. For instance, until recently you could easily lose your job because students/parents found out you are gay. Trans people still face this reality in many states, and we are currently much more likely to regress than to progress.

With regard to the toilet: especially female-to-male trans people face a big issue that they look male (and are hence considered predators in female toilets), but are banned from using male toilets. This may seem like a minor issue if you aren’t affected, but in practice it’s a big deal.

Weird question. You aren’t affected by it, until you are I guess. For instance, can you take your partner to company events where others bring their partners? Can you take the toilet that fits your gender identity? How will your boss/coworkers feel about you when they inevitably find out about your sexual orientation? Nice that you think you can separate your identity from your job, but let’s see how your coworkers feel.

Another good question is why AIs do not mindlessly regurgitate source material. The reason is that they have access to so much copyrighted material. If they were trained on only one book, they would constantly regurgitate material from that one book. Because it’s trained on many (millions) books, it’s able to get creative. So the argument of OpenAI really boils down to: “we are not breaking copyright law, because we have used sufficient copyrighted material to avoid directly infringing on copyright”.

I know my way around the Jolly Roger myself. At the same time using copyrighted materials in a commercial setting (as OpenAI does) shouldn’t be free.

I am also not really getting the argument. If I as a human want to learn a subject from a book I buy it ( or I go to a library who paid for it). If it’s similar to how humans learn, it should cost equally much.

The issue is of course that it’s not at all similar to how humans learn. It needs VASTLY more data to produce something even remotely sensible. Develop AI that’s truly transformative, by making it as efficient as humans are in learning, and the cost of paying for copyright will be negligible.

The current generation of data hungry AI models with energy requirements of a small country should be replaced ASAP, so if copyright laws spur innovation in that direction I am all for it.

Not at all. Trump’s case is much more difficult and he has used far more delay tactics. It’s a bit similar to preparing a case for a mob boss vs for a foot soldier.

I call BS. I have given diaper changes to my kids on the road that take more than 10 minutes. I won’t even mention lunch breaks, dinner breaks mid morning snack breaks, pooping breaks etc.
