How in the world could you be upset that a product you already paid for is not providing that specific feature for free anymore. They’ve even made the phone software free!
How many people with a folder full of media also know how to safety expose a home server to the internet? It would be less than 1%.
Meanwhile, you don’t need network engineer levels of knowledge to run Plex for remote access. You download the software, choose the folder, and send your friends a share link.

The ideas have always been there, it’s just a bottle neck on cheap electronics and people figuring out the foundation technology. I can’t think of to many tech advancements that have surprised me; that’s not too say they aren’t impressive, but just about anything we can imagine is possible.
The main thing I don’t expect to see is useful and reliable brain/electronics interfaces. I think biology is too unique for an of the shelf product to be possible, which means it’s too hard to make a profitable product.
The Australian government is heavily criticised for half-assing fibre internet because they did copper to the house in most cases. We still, a decade later, have one of the worst internet in the western world.
I think satellites are likely much cheaper to deliver internet to a whole continent than trying to run bloody copper.
That’s a plus. I drove a hire car with a joystick/dial/button thing that could control the touch screen. It was so much easier to pay attention to driving while controlling something on screen. With touch screens you need to watch your finger as you press because there’s no tactile feedback.

I think all of those applications will, or already have, develop independently of something like Facebook metaverse. If anything meta is taking those useful applications and trying to turn it into a household product that nobody needs.

The point of the analogy is about randomness and infinity. Any page of gibberish is equally as likely as a word perfect page of Shakespeare given equal weighting to the entry if characters. There are factors introduced with the behaviours of monkeys and placement of keys, but I don’t think that is the point of the analogy.
They are providing extra service. Using Plex on mobile is now free for everyone, which is a huge step forward. It’s not a bad trade off for server owners to require Plex pass for remote viewing (which is only necessary if you’re not using a VPN like tailscale for free remote viewing).
I don’t get why people are freaking out over a one off fee to unlock something that has running costs for Plex, which itself isn’t necessary if you just opt for a free VPN client like tailscale.
