Carriers don’t care. They are selling you data. They don’t care how it’s used. Google is selling you a phone. Apple held down the market for a long time for being the phone that has some of the best security. As an android user that makes me want to switch phones. Not carriers.

If you want to talk money then it is in businesses best interest that money from their users is being used on their products, not being scammed through the use of their products.

Secondly machine learning or algorithms can detect patterns in ways a human can’t. In some circles I’ve read that the programmers themselves can’t decipher in the code how the end result is spat out, just that the inputs will guide it. Besides the fact that scammers can circumvent any carefully laid down antispam, antiscam, anti-virus through traditional software, a learning algorithm will be magnitudes harder to bypass. Or easier. I see what you’re saying. Top up voted corporate social media posts and AI finding top results for search engines and query requests is exactly why people need to ask other people wtf is going on with anything. It’s confusing enough to try to parse through irrelevant information, maybe asking someone will narrow down what you need to know.

It’s not hard. It’s that information from people has become more fact than a single persons opinion on a topic. Do you have any idea how many variables are involved in why my cucumbers are dying in my green house? How many links and articles I’ve read before just asking it to the community and finding the answer in literally the first person who replied?

Information, wisdom, knowledge are all empowered by a community, and trusting a search engine to populate those will eliminate the community aspect of information gathering. It’ll cause the watered down, lost in information practices that we have going on today.

Doing this, in 30 years no one will be able to grow cucumbers in their greenhouse becuase all the information you’ll have will be based off the same shitty technique and everyone’s attempt at that technique, and no one will talk about the nuanced variables.

Imagine taking the technical and stubborn creme of the crop redditors and that’s who’s mostly on lemmy. It used to be those who wanted an open source community, but it got it’s user bumps during the reddit exodus. I would have never heard of lemmy if it wasn’t for the fact I used reddit exclusively through the redditsync app. And when that shut down I came here naturally on the backbone of the developer going here.

I’ve been here since. The community isn’t bad. I still get responses on niche things like gardening and fish tank related issues I had. It’s just 3 comments vs 30. But somehow it’s better. Because on reddit I can’t even get a post posted half the time, and the other half I find out I’m banned from that sub because of a comment I made years ago on a completely unrelated post on a sub I don’t even know.

Oh. Maybe I shouldn’t share this but I never paid for a windows product. Even office when it went to 360 I stopped trying to pirate earlier versions and just switched to free open source office tools.

Windows 8 I think got authenticated when it went to 10 and I’ve just been riding that install. Still got my handy USB stick whenever I reinstall.

The shooter game is just a time killer for me. Dopamine memories from better times. The problem with using compatible apps is not all my friends will. Besides using it since Windows 95, I’ve done everything on it. Warez, making shady software work, learning the ins and outs to keep it my way.

I thought about switching since I’ve dabbled in dual boot before, but I just f don’t want to be restarting my computer to keep switching between OS when one can do all I want with some baggage, and the other can do less without it.

Mainly for me it’s compatibility. Discord, MW3, networking between my main PC and HTPC. Online gaming with friends. Full steam support.

It just works. Switching to Linux, finding a distro that will encompass what I do, running into problems, having to fix them, or worst case scenario finding out that I can’t do the thing (mw3 or any game that has denuvo) without having to switch back to windows anyways in a dual boot I just don’t see why having Linux to do anything that I’m already doing on windows is worth it. Why have dual boot. Removing the annoying windows baggage is just not enough for me to switch.

I just now switched from chrome to Firefox because they finally implemented the removal of anti ad extensions. It was an easy switch. The UI is a little different. But I hate nothing more than ads. Despise them. And paying to remove them isn’t an option because it means I’m giving into the hostage situation.

If windows becomes unmanageable, I can’t find ANY software to remove ads, even remove windows features that I can’t live with, then I’ll consider sacrificing the few things I can’t do on Linux and move to Linux.

Wtf is this a reasonable comment to discuss a nuanced topic where a person who never used Linux and has no desire to can maybe find options to adjust and keep my windows from enshittifying?
